GayVN Awards, Lorenzo Martone, Christian Louboutin, And Big Brother Brazil

  • Brazil may not be as liberal as you think. A national poll published by newspaper O Globo revealed that 99% of the population over 16 years old has some form of prejudice against homosexuals. Also according to the poll, 16% of the people interviewed considered homosexuality a disease. The Brasil Sem Homofobia (Brazil With No Homophobia) program reported that a new hate crime was commited every third day last year. The federal government will use the data collected on the poll to develop new policies against discrimination.
  • AMG Brasil's Rio scored top (no pun intended) nominations for this year's GayVN Awards, including best picture and best director. Click here to watch an x-rated preview of the movie (NSFW).
  • Lorenzo Martone talks about Valentine's Day with Marc Jacobs.
  • Michelle Obama's Vogue cover.
  • Christian Louboutin is heading to Trancoso in Bahia for a little vacation, and to look for inspiration for his next collection. His flagship store at Iguatemi Mall in São Paulo opens next month.
  • More Edilson Nascimento backstage at the new Guess Underwear ad campaign, and at Ohlala Mag.
  • Newcomer Daniela Borges shoots Louis Vuitton Beachwear in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Brazilian jeanswear label Zoomp was shut down by police officers.
  • With 72% of the votes, Newton was eliminated from Big Brother Brazil last night. Expect to see him posing for Globo's Paparazzo later in the week.

The New Girls From Brazil

The editors at Vogue Brazil seem to be listening to some of the criticism and making an effort to present better content. The latest cover of the magazine, featuring five promising newcomers, is the best and coolest I have seen on the magazine in a long time.

Watch out for them: Nathalie Edenburg, Daniela Borges, Claudia Seiler, Luana Teifke, and Luiza Winberg.

Now quick question: where the hell is Gracie Carvalho, the girl with the most bookings this season in Brazil? I know she landed the cover of L'Officiel Brazil last month, but so did Claudia Seiler, and that did not stop her from being featured in Vogue.

What Did I Tell You About This Girl?

Even though she skipped the shows in Milan last week, Brazilian Daniela Borges was selected one of the Top 10 Newcomers of the season by Models.com. Made In Brazil has exclusive images of a recent test shoot Daniela did in New York.

I first mentioned her here last season. More exclusive pictures after the jump.

Book Her ASAP: Daniela Borges

Newcomer Daniela Borges booked pretty major shows like Narciso Rodriguez and Marchesa, but it is her Marc Jacobs booking that is definitely going to put her on the map this season. She sent me a picture from the dressing room of the show last Friday.

Love it. Expect to see a lot more from her.

It's Fashion Week In New York And...

Alexandre Herchcovitch scored only mild reviews from Style.com. I liked the collection when I saw it in São Paulo last month, but agree that it never actually took off. If all the cocktail dresses on parade had been paired with outerwear the story could have been different.

Brazilian label Iodice made its New York debut on Monday night, but I have not found reviews for it online yet. Considering the (extremely distasteful) collection I saw in São Paulo last month, it is better off unreviewed.

Raquel opened the Halston show, which looked to me like one of the worst investments Harvey Weinstein ever made. Rachel Zoe is going to have a rough time convincing celebs to wear those dresses.

I am digging Patrick Ervell, especially because of the gold section that closed his rather somber presentation. Unlike so many of the new menswear designers, he does not seem inspired by an indie rocker who has never seen the sun, which is refreshing.

The men's collections confirmed the need for plaid and tartan next fall.

Shorts for fall? Sign me up. I loved everything from Michael Bastian.

Sexy Brazilian Bruno Santos returned to the runways at the Nautica show.

Southern Brazilian Kees Hattem is having his best New York season ever.

Newcomer Daniela Borges has already scored bookings for Narciso Rodriguez, Monique Lhuillier, and DKNY.

For my favorite candid coverage of the New York shows, check out Ford Models TV. My friend Matthew is doing an amazing job.

Now do yourself a favor and read what Cathy Horyn has to say about the shows.

Brazil's Most Promising Fashion Duo

Henzo Hülle and Daniela Borges started modeling about a year ago, but are already piling up some strong editorial work. Below is an exclusive picture of the two shot for Teen Vogue by Arthur Elgort.
