Waste Land, the award-winning documentary about Brazilian artist Vik Muniz directed by Lucy Walker and scored by Moby, opens on Friday, October 29, at the Angelika Film Center in New York. Filmed over nearly three years, the documentary follows Vik Muniz to Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest garbage dump, where he photographs pickers of recyclable materials, and recreates their portraits in massive scale out of trash. The portraits are then auctioned off, with the money reverted back to the community at the garbage dump.
I have not seen the documentary yet, but it looks incredibly moving. It is refreshing to see a movie paint a true portrait of poverty in Brazil without resorting to guns and violence. If you are in New York, make sure to get tickets for it this weekend.
