Re-election

Brazilian president Lula da Silva was re-elected yesterday with over 60% of the votes. I could go on about politics, but I would rather focus on the simple fact that in a thirld world country with 200 million people where voting is mandatory, the results of the presidential election where revealed in less than 5 hours. Can someone please try to explain to me why the same can't be achieved in the United States?

Yeah, kind of funny that WE can't even get it right!

i dunno, but it seems to me in the us, we're always waiting for the absentee ballots. you can't count ballots that haven't arrived yet. i personally like to go vote in person, but some people don't have the time to.

That is a damned good question!

well, first you are dealing with an election where one candidate got 60% of the vote.
exactly what takes so long in the US? Most polls dont close until 9pm-10pm. (using the 5 hour timeframe you claim, that would mean by 2am western/pacific time we woudl know the result of national elections) Usually we know before that. Usually within hours we do know who the winner is. so I am not sure what you are reffering to. Only in close elections do we end up waiting for a final tally. rarely does that change the outcome.
