Travel Tips: Rio

I am going to start making more of an effort to publish tips from readers who recently visited Brazil. This week's tips about Rio come from Adam. Here is the email he sent me:

Thanks to your wonderful blogmaster (that would be me), when I visited Rio for the first time last week, I had some great suggestions of places to go and things to do. Here's what I recommend:

  • Taking the train ride up to Corcovado. The train costs R$36, which equates to about US $18 since the exchange rate is almost 2 to 1, and it's totally worth it. The ride takes you up a steep hill through a jungle overlooking all of Rio, and arrives at the top giving you a majestic view of the beautiful city.

  • Visiting the "Jardim Botanico" (Botanical Gardens) designed by Burle Marx. It's a great way to spend an afternoon.

  • The Hippie Market in Ipanema on Sunday, which is a great place to buy fun Brazilian crafts and souvenirs.

  • Going to a "sucos" (juice) bar and getting some acai with granola every morning.

  • Checking out the H. Stern Headquarters on Rua Garcia D'Ávila in Ipanema. You can go on a great self-guided tour through their jewelry making facilities, and you get to see some amazing precious stones upclose.

It's amazing to go to a country that you have never been to before and be surrounded by people who speak a language that you can't speak. Although it was a little difficult to communicate, my combination of English, Spanish and sign language conveyed my message. Everyone who we met was incredibly nice and gracious. My boyfriend and I had an wonderful time in Rio, and I would go back in a heartbeat!

agree that setting of RIO is spectacular, (been there 3 times) but honestly must be very careful. A very crime-ridden city with many guys ready to rip you off...many nice people but never have felt particularly safe, even in the hotels. If visiting be very cautious...........

Are you going to play with me when I am out there on the 19th of MAy????? I will be so bored and my bf (Corey aka Opie) will most likely be busy :-(

    You recommendations are so pedestrian.

I hope to do something good for everyone that wants to spend some holidays in Natal (Brazil). Just telling you that there is a new site that helps who wants to spend some days in Natal, to move, spend time, have a good time there....This is the site:
