Over 100 gay and straight couples got together yesterday at the gay section of the beach in Ipanema to (kiss and) protest against violence and discrimination. Protesters demanded strong action against the five men who brutally attacked a gay couple at the beach during Carnival, as well as punishment for the police officers who did not arrest the aggressors on the spot. Alternative punishments such as distributing condoms and literature or internships at gay rights groups were suggested.

I am not defending the police, but I think part of the problem is their salaries are not very high so their morale might be issue.
