"Blindness" To Open Cannes Film Festival

Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles received the news yesterday that his upcoming release Blindness was chosen to open this year's Cannes Film Festival, which starts on May 14. The movie will also be competing for the Palm d'Or, which will be presented by Robert de Niro.

Meirelles is not the only Brazilian director up for the big award in Cannes. Walter Salles of Central Station is also up for the Palm d'Or with Linha de Passe ( or Line of Passage).

Blindness stars Julianne Moore as the only person able to see in a town in which everyone else is mysteriously struck blind. Click here to watch the trailer.

I Can't Wait To Watch This

After reading director Fernando Meirelles' blog for the past few months, I can't wait for his movie adaptation of Jose Saramago's Blindness to hit theaters.

Love that Sandra Oh has a cameo. Video via Papel Pop.

Swimsuit Movie History

To celebrate spring break, Moviefone is hosting an online poll to elect the hottest leading men in swimsuits. While there are perhaps way too many swimtrunks in the selection, speedos are there as well, worn by Elvis Presley, Jesse Bradford, and 007 Daniel Craig. Brazilian actor Rodrigo Santoro is also included in the list, for his role in Charlie's Angels. Head over to Moviefone now and vote for him (although I must say my personal favorite happens to be the latest Bond).

A Semana: The Shape Issue, The Hulk, Madonna, And Big Brother Brazil

Gisele is at it again. And by at it I mean a Vogue cover in which she poses next to a leading man. The last time it happened was with George Clooney. This April it is Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James, and I love the result.

The preview for The Incredible Hulk, which was partially shot in Brazil last year, has hit the web.

Check out the cover artwork for Madonna's upcoming album Hard Candy.

Fergie performed in São Paulo yesterday thanks to her deal with Motorola.

My TV crush of the year, Big Brother's Rafinha, scored the leadership on the show this week, meaning there is no way he will be up for elimination next Tuesday.

On an interview to Ego yesterday, openly gay Big Brother contestant Marcelo claimed he was actually bisexual and fell in love with a girl on the cast of the show. He still has 14 minutes and counting.

DJ Scotty Thomson will be making its way to Brazil again for a performance at Le Boy in Rio on March 28.

If you are in Rio, make sure to stop by photographer Pedro Stephan's exhibit Entre Amigos & Amores at Centro Cultural da Justiça Federal. It opens on Monday at 7pm and goes until April 27, featuring over 100 pictures depicting the gay scene in Rio.

Preview the second issue of Bello Mag, which features some beautiful pics of model Evan Wadle by Greg Vaughan.

And What About The Oscars?

The worst thing about watching the Oscars in Brazil is the fact that we are two hours ahead, so the show starts pretty late. This year, however, I did not care much about it because I was already bored and ready to go to bed after the first hour. Let's face it, I watch it for the red carpet, and luckily that is broadcast live on E! even in Brazil.

On my first hour though I was happy to see Tilda Swinton (wearing the worst and least feminine dress ever designed by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin) take home the award for Best Supporting Actress. If there was a reason I did not left the theatre while watching Michael Clayton, it was certainly her performance. This morning when I woke up I was also happy to see that Marion Cotillard was awarded Best Actress for La Vie En Rose.

Pay attention to at Cate Blanchett's face when the winner is announced. Priceless.

I sort of also have to give it to Marion for pulling off a Gaultier dress that could have easily turned her into a soon-to-be piece of sushi. Props for Best Overall Look also go to Jennifer Garner, Cameron Diaz, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Hudson, who redeemed herself from the tragic bolero of last year.

And The Golden Bear Goes To...

"Tropa de Elite" (The Elite Squad), which I reviewed here back in November, won the Golden Bear for best film at the 58th Berlin International Film Festival. The Brazilian movie directed by Jose Padilha beat Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, clearly a favorite for the award this year.

And Jose Padilha was not the only Brazilian to win an award in Berlin. 25-year-old Felipe Sholl won the Teddy Queer Film Award in the short film category for , a five-minute dialogue between two teenagers in a public bathroom. Felipe is the first Brazilian to win a Teddy Award.

FYI, The Elite Squad will debut in the US next month.

Alice Braga In The Hollywood Issue

Brazilian actress Alice Braga is definitely the female Rodrigo Santoro (and maybe more). You may have recently seen her star opposite Will Smith in I Am Legend, and this month she gets a much coveted spot on the fold-out cover of Vanity Fair, next to the likes of Emily Blunt, America Ferrera, and Jessica Biel.

Brazilianizer Of The Week: Will Smith

Will Smith landed in Rio yesterday, checked into the Copacabana Palace Hotel, and had pizza for dinner. He is in the city to promote I Am Legend, which starts playing in Brazil this Friday.

This morning he attended a press conference for the movie, and posed for pictures like Gisele.

Santoro May Do A Gilmore Girl

Rodrigo Santoro is keeping busy this holiday season with another movie project in the works. The Brazilian actor is part of the cast of the upcoming Fox Atomic college comedy The Post-Grad Survival Guide, in which he may play one of the love interests of Alexis Bledel, known for her role on The Gilmore Girls. Friday Night Lights' star Zach Gilford, Michael Keaton, and Carol Burnett are also joining the cast.

The film centers on Ryden Malby (played by Bledel), who graduates from college and is forced to move back home with her eccentric family while trying to find a job, meet the right guy and figure out where her life is headed. It is directed by Vicky Jenson, from Shrek and Shark Tale.

A Semana: The Police, Matthew McConaughey, Itacaré, And A Brazilian At Dior

Away from Brazilian stages for over 25 years, The Police packed Maracanã stadium in Rio with 74 thousand people for their only performance in the country last Saturday night. In spite of what I hear was a great performance, according to an online poll less than 40% were happy with the show. There were slow lines at the entrance of the stadium, and security was a problem: no metal detectors were turned on, and bags were not being checked.

The much talked about movie Tropa de Elite is set to make its international debut at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where it will be running for a Golden Bear. The last Brazilian movie to win the big prize was Central Station back in 1998.

Save the bartender, save the world: Lance Bass' ex Pedro Andrade has a new gig.

Rumor has it that Camila Alves is pregnant with Matthew McConaughey's baby.

The strike by the Writers Guild of America may result in a new season loaded with reality TV in the US. I am certainly not complaining, but I am already dying to know what happens on Heroes. Hopefully I will be able to watch it via Hulu next season.

Itacaré is the only Brazilian town which made it to the New York Times' list of 53 places to go in 2008.

A Semana: Glamour, Angels, Tropa de Elite, Gay Bloggers, And Gay Bikers

Brazil got its first online luxury boutique with the launch of Glamour.com.br. The design of the site is cheap looking and lacks luster, but the selection of merchandise includes a R$6,980 Lanvin bag, as well as R$1,850 Dior sunglasses.

Isabeli Fontana is definitely on the rise again: she was the star of the Rosa Chá fashion show in São Paulo last night, celebrating the pre-opening of Buddha Bar at Daslu.

Brazilian model Andre Ziehe takes over the 29th slot at Models.com list of top male models. The only Brazilian ranking higher than him right now is Evandro Soldati, at number 3.

Missed the Victoria's Secret fashion show on TV last night? Watch it or download it here.

Globo networks is negotiating the rights to develop a TV series based on the controversial movie Tropa de Elite. Production will not start before the movie's international debut, set for the Berlin Film Festival.

Towleroad has news about Gus Van Sant's movie Milk, the upcoming biopic of the slain San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights icon Harvey Milk.

Supposedly gay soccer player Richarlyson called it quits with grilfriend Letícia Carlos because of her decision to pose for the January issue of Playboy. According to the girlfriend, the player did not want the future mother of his children to expose herself for everyone to see. Why bother when she is not even pregnant, and they had been dating for only three months?

Blogger Marcos Costa will soon debut his own gossip column about São Paulo's gay nightlife on the site Cena Carioca. He is not afraid to say what is on his mind, so do expect some controversy (and lots of angry queens).

São Paulo's newest club, Ultra Diesel, opened last Friday to the worst possible reviews from the Brazilian gay blogosphere. According to almost every gay site in the country, the club smelled of fresh paint, and there was water leaking from the ceiling. Critics were so harsh that owner Marcelo Piccine released a formal apology. In an era of top notch service started by gay mecca The Week, you just don't open a club in São Paulo before making sure everything is flawless.

Nothing planned for December 11? Get on your bicycle and join the Gay Bikers SP group for a night of biking around São Paulo. It is a good way to meet new people and also get in shape for summer. For more information about it, email Andre Hidalgo.

A Semana: Isabeli's Comeback, The Best Swimmer Of 2007, Condom Machines, And Movies

A year after giving birth to her second child, Isabeli Fontana is making a big comeback this season: she booked the Victoria's Secret show, stars in the current lingerie campaign for H&M, booked the next issue of Numero shot by Greg Kadel, and will appear in a 20-page spread in the next Vogue Paris shot by Peter Lindbergh.

Forget about naked models and designers, the next issue of Visionaire will be devoted to your senses. The new Visionaire Sound will come with five 12-inch vinyls and 2 CDs in a limited edition of 4,000 copies, at a price tag of $250.

The latest issue of Flaunt magazine celebrates 25 years of Calvin Klein underwear with a spread featuring some of the hottest male models around, such as Garret Neff and Brazilian Romulo Pires.

Thiago Pereira is voted best swimmer of the year by the readers of Swimming World , beating Michael Phelps.

Unique and affordable destination: Fernando de Noronha gets reviewed by The Today Show.

Vegas in São Paulo is going to be the first club in the city to feature a condom machine available on premises. In a pioneer project in the country in the fight against AIDS and STDs, club goers will no longer have to worry about having condoms or lube on them in case they get lucky. The machines will be installed in several gay and straight clubs throughout the city.

The controversial Brazilian movie Tropa de Elite may not have been selected to represent the country at next year's Academy Awards, but its Oscar hopes are not over yet: with an American debut set for next year, director José Padilha is intent on having his picture run for the main Oscar categories in 2009, as an example of what happened with City Of God.

Who knew there was a movie adaptation of Cleopatra in Brazil? It took home the award for best film at Brasília's Film Festival this week, but the audience apparently did not agree with the choice. Director Julio Bressane was booed during his acceptance speech. I can only imagine how bad it sucks.

I absolutely love this screentest Natalie Portman just did for the New York Times.

Tropa de Elite

I was a bit depressed last night that for the first time in three seasons I was going to miss the first episode of my favorite show, Project Runway, because I am in Brazil right now. I know I can always watch it online later (as I watch Heroes), but it is just not the same thing.

So in order not to slit my wrists last night I decided to finally make the time to go see Tropa de Elite, probably one of the most controversial Brazilian movies to date.

I could have watched the movie before since it has already been available for over two months as a bootleg DVD, but I wanted to make sure I paid for a ticket to see it, as my own little way of making sure the national film industry keeps on growing. Strangely enough though, the buzz around Tropa de Elite was probably caused mostly by the piracy scandal around it. As soon as bootleg copies made their way to the streets of São Paulo and Rio, all the Brazilian media could talk about was the brutality and raw violence on-screen.

The plot revolves around a captain of the BOPE or Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais, the Special Police Operations Battalion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police, trying to find a suitable replacement in two young cadets in order to leave the battalion. Tropa de Elite, however, is much more than that. It is a movie about the corrupt relationship between the military police and drug traffic in Rio, contrasted by the high moral standards of the BOPE. Like City Of God, Tropa de Elite does not merely paint a picture of the reality in the slums of Rio; it raises important questions about social differences and the consequences of drug traffic, and scares you with the lack of an immediate answer. It is a portrait of a harsh reality which is embarrassing and difficult to watch, but that cannot be denied.

I did not get to see Heidi, Tim, Nina, and Mr. Kors dish about garments sewn in a day last night, but I did get to see what is probably one of the best movies produced in Brazil to date. As soon as it makes its way to theaters in North America and Europe, I highly recommend that you all go see it.

Click here for the official preview.

A Semana: Madonna, SexyBack, Angel Alessandra Ambrósio, And Sexual Diversity

Add Kanye West to the list of collabos on Madonna's upcoming album. While Madonna was putting the finishing touches to her album at RecordPlant studios in Los Angeles last week, Kanye West was working on the new Michael Jackson album in the room next door. Pharrell invited Kanye in to meet Madonna, and she came up with an idea for Kanye to rap on one of her songs on the spot. On More Madonna news, she is supposed to film her cameo on Annie Lennox's new video for Sing within the next 2 weeks.

Missy Elliott brings SexyBack in a new remix of Justin Timberlake's hit.

Alicia Keys goes Grays Anatomy on us on her new video for Like You'll Never See Me Again, loaded with tears and running maskara.

Milo Ventimiglia goes shirtless again in Heroes, in the first episode this season which answered a lot of pending questions. I would still be hooked on it even if Milo were to keep his shirt on.

People magazine names Matt Damon Sexiest Man Alive.

Model Alessandra Ambrósio talks to Brazil's Chic about being a Victoria's Secret angel, tomorrow night's fashion show, and her favorite Spice Girl.

Von Dutch trucker hats and tees will be available in Floripa starting today thanks to the opening of the brand's first flagship store in South America. I don't want to sound negative, but even in Brazil Von Dutch hats are already so-three-years-ago.

The 15th Annual MixBrasil Festival, celebrating sexual diversity in film and video, kicked off last night in São Paulo. The line up includes 179 films, 8 parties, and the famous Show do Gongo. After November 22, the festival heads to Porto Alegre, Rio, and Brasilia.

A Semana: 007, Beckham, And The Out 100

007 Daniel Craig tops the Best Celeb Bodies poll by a British fitness firm.

Talking about Bond, Daniel Craig is reportedly hand-picking his Bond girls for the new 007 film, due out at the end of next year. There will be four girls, all of whom will look Latin-American. Brazilian actress Cleo Pires has already auditioned for a role.

Designers Viktor & Rolf take on rosé champagne.

Brazilian streetwear label Zapping will develop a small collection of clothing in partnership with band Cansei de Ser Sexy (or CSS).

Out magazine unveiled this year's Out 100 with a party at Cipriani Wall Street last Friday, honoring singer Annie Lennox with a "Humanitarian of the Year" award. This is the first time in the history of the Out 100 issue in which all pictures featured were shot exclusively for the magazine.

Check out another excerpt from the hot Dieux Du Stade 2008 DVD Making Of, with sexy rugby player Julien Arias (warning: semi-NSFW).

Take a look at the full spread with Raquel Zimmermann on the 50th issue of V magazine. Amazing.

A Semana: The Hulk, Cavalli, Celine, Batman And Robin

Brazilian actress Débora Nascimento is part of the cast of the new Hulk movie, shooting in Rio this week. The crew is reportedly staying at the recently opened Fasano, and at Caesar Park in Ipanema.

Designer Kris Van Assche was in São Paulo this week, casting for the next Dior Homme show. Names on his list of options include Martin Kunzli, Rafael Swarovsky, and Igor Monteiro.

In less than two hours, shoppers cleared the racks at the H&M flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York, buying every single item available from the retailer's collaboration with Roberto Cavalli. The designer himself was there along with model Jessica Stam, watching the mayhem.

After announcing a partnership with Eastpak, Raf Simons is at it again. The Belgian designer is rumored to have signed with Fred Perry to develop a menswear collection, set for a fall 2008 debut.

Stream Alicia Keys' new album As I Am on MTV.com now. I got a copy of it this week, and have been playing it non-stop. It is r&b at its best. I also highly recommend picking up Seal's System, which was produced by Stuart Price and sounds like a soulful version of Confessions On A Dancefloor.

The greatest singer in the world covers Heart's Alone on her new album. Watch her perform it live.

The new play A Vida Secreta de Batman e Robin (or The Secret Lives Of Batman & Robin) is getting buzz in São Paulo for portraying the duo as a gay couple who sleeps together in the batcave. With the Village People and Donna Summer on the soundtrack, Batman reveals that he wished he were Butterflyman.

This week's Veja São Paulo gives an in-depth picture of the real story behind the wave of attacks and murders by punks and skinheads in the Jardins neighborhood over the last year. The article also finally confirms what the police was afraid to report: the death of French tourist Gregor Erwan Landouar, stabbed on Gay Pride weekend, had a homophobic explanation.

The Miami Herald examines racism and discrimination against blacks in Brazil. I suggest all of you take the time to read it.

Talk about photoshop: the king of pop Michael Jackson is on the cover of October's L'Uomo Vogue, photographed by Bruce Weber.

Justin Timberlake teams up with Beyoncé for a duet in Until The End Of Time (now why not shoot a video sans t-shirt for the song?).

Go behind-the-scenes at Kelly Clarkson's new video for Don't Waste Your Time.

MTV Brazil will be handing out awards tonight at the 2007 VMB. Daniela Cicarelli is hosting the show again, in thirteen different outfits. JT, Fergie, Amy Winehouse, and Fall Out Boy are up for International Artist Of The Year.

Cao Hamburger's movie O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias has been selected to represent the country in the race for Best Foreign Film at next year's Oscars, beating another seventeen entries and the much talked about Tropa de Elite. The movie will make its US debut late December.

The gay couple from the soap Paraíso Tropical is featured on the cover of gossip magazine Flash. According to the magazine, the couple is a sign that times are changing on national TV, and that people are becoming more accepting of gay characters on soap operas. I am only agreeing with that statement once I see gay characters acting like regular gay men, and not just characters added to the story line for the sake of making it more politically correct. Note to screenwriters: watch Brothers & Sisters asap.

Meanwhile in the Northern hemisphere, it is not a gay couple, but rather a leather-clad Last Supper ad that is causing a big controversy.

Mix Brasil selects the best swimsuits to get you through pool party season, which officially starts this Sunday in São Paulo with a special edition at The Week, celebrating the club's third anniversary. Do not miss it if you are in town. I certainly won't.
