522 tons of garbage were collected in Rio on the 1st of January. In Copacabana alone, 1,300 people worked to remove all the garbage before dawn.
Torrential rains, floods, and mudslides in Angra dos Reis have killed 47 people over the last four days. On Friday night, the Sankay Inn resort and neighboring houses completely disappeared as a mountain collapsed as mud in the island of Ilha Grande. 221 homes in Angra dos Reis have been evacuated and closed off this morning while rescue efforts are still in effect. The vice mayor of the city has estimated that the city will spend around R$ 250 million to start cleaning up the damage. Pictures of the tragedy are available at O Dia Online and Terra.
