Brazilianizer Of The Week #1: Jack Nicholson

According to Brazilian newspaper O Globo, actor Jack Nicholson is set to direct a movie based on Paulo Coelho's novel 11 Minutes. The story about a Brazilian girl who ends up living as a prostitute in Switzerland is being adapted for the big screen by Marcos Bernstein for New Line Cinema.

I am now reading his latest book The Witch Of Portobello, but I don't think it has been translated to English yet. More information about the author on his website.

Three Sides To Every Story

A few weeks ago I received a copy in the mail of Clarence Nero's new novel "Three Sides To Every Story," but I only found the time to read it this past Saturday on the plane on my way to Brazil. The novel is set in New Orleans pre-Katrina and deals with sexuality, society and race, themes which are as relevant in Brazil as they are in the United States. I haven't finished it yet, but I am finding it very interesting (and even educational in a certain level to someone who did not grow up in the United States). It was released last week, and is now available at Amazon.

Next on my reading list: Paulo Coelho's new novel A Bruxa de Portobello. I tend to read a lot while I am in Brazil since I don't have a TV in my room.

If you're trapped in the closet...

Or just simply trying to deal with your gay demons, then I suggest picking up a copy of The Way Out, the first major self-help book written from a gay perspective by my friend (and talented writer if I may add) Chris Nutter. I had the opportunity of reading an advance copy last month, and was surprised by how much I did not know about Chris, and how much he was willing to share in this book. In case you are wondering, it is a not a coming out manual, but more of an informal approach on coming to terms with one's sexuality and everything that comes with it. I only wish it were available a few years ago when I needed it the most, but I am sure it will create an impact on generations to come.

If you are in New York, Chris will be signing copies of the book tomorrow evening at Barnes & Noble in Chelsea from 7 to 9, followed by a party at the lounge at Elmo until midnight.

Rioerótico

Rioerótico, the new book by Brazil's pioneering fashion photographer Otto Stupakoff, will be released at bookstore Paparazzi in São Paulo today.

Stupakoff moved to New York in the late sixties and became known for his photographs of the celebrated and famous. His work has been featured extensively in Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, and Time. His latest book is a tribute to the youthful, relaxed sexuality of his native country, Brazil.

Summer Books: Half-Life

Words_book_halflife_1So this summer I am skipping Vogue and People and trying to get a little reading done. Some of my beloved blogmates have recently mentioned Aaron Krach's debut novel Half-Life, but I have actually read it (the whole thing). Not knowing much what too expect (from the little I know about Mr. Krach), I was honestly taken by the story and by Krach's meticulous attention to detail and the realism of the characters he created. One cannot avoid but feeling that Krach actually becomes a better writer throughout the book by making the story more vivid (and almost palpable to the reader) at every page turn. If this is only Half-Life, imagine what he can do with a full one... (This is going to sound really corny but) I am certain that we'll all be reading a lot more about him very soon.

Summer Books: Specimen Days

037429962501_sclzzzzzzz_ I like Summer because it usually allows me to catch up on my reading since I have a little more free time (and I multi task by reading while also tanning or relaxing). Michael Cunningham's Specimen Days was the last book I finished, so I decided it would be the first to be scrutinized here. While I am (obviously) not a literary genius, I must say I was expecting a little something more from Mr. Cunningham based on his previous books.
