With the American economy going down the drain, this may be a good time to plan a trip to Brazil. In less than 10 days, the dollar went up from about R$ 1.60 to R$ 2.31 today, and Rio is celebrating Gay Pride over the weekend.

It still blows my mind when narrowminded kind of people still relate Rio to mugging when we can all be the subject of a robbery anywhere in the world.
Get a grip

The last trip my parents made to Brazil, including Rio, my mother was warned that she should leave her diamonds at home and wear past-cubic Zirc. The warnings must have been very strong as she did. My Mother without her diamonds is kind of like the pope without his robes.
Unfortunately once a city gets this kind of reputation it seems it takes a generation to get it behind them.

Scorpio, your statement is quite off base and highly generalized. I've been all over Brasil for the past 6 years 2002-2007 and have never been robbed or have encountered any adverse situations!
When one travels using his "BIG" head and operate in the manner in which one goes about meandering in any large city, more than likely he'll be safe! I know that I have been, and I've traveled to 6 of our 7 continents and have lived in 2 of them!
So, get off of it that Brasil is rampant with violence, esp. as that concept exists amongst some folks about Rio de janeiro.
