Tonight Globo networks in Brazil will broadcast the final episode of the miniserie Antônia, about a group of 4 black girls struggling to come out of the suburbs of São Paulo and to score a recording deal for their hip hop group.
I did not know much about Antônia before l landed in São Paulo, and I am glad to see that Globo is opening up, and investing on show about overcoming prejudice with a mainly all-black cast. It is not often that a Brazilian television show portrays life in the suburbs as it is, especially from a woman's perspective.
The miniserie is actually a continuation of the movie of the same title, directed by Tata Amaral, and scheduled to open in Brazil in February. The screenplay for the movie was based on audition tapes from the girls up for the lead roles, and the soundtrack is mostly funk and hip hop. "Dreamgirls" is set to be released in the country around the same time.

Oi. Tenho Globo aqui en Nova Iorke, mais, I dont see it on the line-up for tonight. Is it on a sister channel like GNT or something?
Muito Obrigada!

Wow! I saw the film "Antonia" at a film festival and spoke with the director. The cast was great. The director is very talented. She explained that as a white person, telling this story was very important because very few images and good stories appear about women of color in Brazil. She felt that it would help open opinions.
The movie does have a gay subplot, one of the women's brother is gay.
